Editorial comments: | Undated but assumed to be from the day of the speech. The format suggests the press was actually given this text; the handwritten corrections were probably made by a staff member listening to the speech as delivered. MT's press releases were almost always issued with the warning: "Check against delivery", although this one does not show the marking (there might have been a coversheet to this release giving that information, now missing). This was more than an incidental suggestion. MT often deviated from her text on delivery of a speech, but always stood by the version released to the press, sensibly enough since it was going to be reported whatever she did. Effectively then the speech had two texts, both with authority. The speech was embargoed until 1930. A transcript from tape of the speech as delivered may be read here. |
