Editorial comments: | MT's speech begins around 9 minutes into the recording, after introductory speeches by a local party figure and the MP for the constituency, Jim Spicer. She took questions for 22 minutes (33 minutes into the tape) The speech was embargoed until 1900 Friday 28 February. The site is very grateful to Hugh Barrett, who ran the sound system for the meeting as a 18 year-old schoolboy and kept a copy of the tape, which he supplied to us. A digital version of the tape will be securely stored at the Churchill Archive Centre. It is rare for any tape of MT's speeches to survive from this period, and this was one of her first as Leader of the Opposition, so it has great interest. |
