She criticised another speaker at the conference, David Gergen, for being "too pessimistic" in saying that US foreign policy had lost its way. She responded to Senator John Warner's comment that the US lacked a clear policy during the Vietnam War by saying "I know it left a scar", but adding that US policy held back the advance of Communism until the rest of the world took up the fight.
