Tuesday 9th March 1982

JH<[John Hoskyns] xeroxing memo. Alfred S<[Alfred Sherman] has contracted to write for Weidenfelds an account of gvt

advised JH to take copies.

Budget cabinet - more or less a love in. WW<[William Whitlaw] says we have a shot at their (SDP wet) tax. Lawson pointed out that there would be a little elbow room next year.

Lunch with Denis T<[Denis Thatcher] and PTB<[Peter Bauer] at IEA - Denis T very impressed by Peter.

Question Time - PM asked which economists supported her policy - she said AAW<[Alan Walters] + Patrick Minford.

Budget went down well

Brilliant performance by GH<[Sir Geoffrey Howe] on Television - made the point that last year the armchair critics said he had got it wrong - output improved etc.
