Broadcasting: Ian Gow minute to MT (encloses transcript of Monday’s Panorama ) [MT: “I really think we should protest officially”] [released 2010]

Document type: Declassified documents
Source: THCR 2/6/2/134
Editorial comments: Ian Gow wrote to Lord Thorneycroft and Angus Maude to act on MT’s response to the minute; his letter follows the minute. The programme transcript (dated 17 September) cannot be published for reason of copyright, but characteristic underlinings suggest that MT read all fifteen pages. The programme, fronted by Richard Lindley, was titled “The Tory Treatment - Does It Hurt?” and examined the response to spending cuts in Conservative-controlled Cheshire, suggesting very much that it did. A striking feature of the programme, apparently causing MT particular annoyance, was that short excerpts from the scriptures were read at various points (e.g., “Ask and it shall be given to you ... If your son asked you for bread, should he be given a stone?”).
