Mrs Thatcher has arrived in Budapest for a two-day official visit to Hungary. She was greeted by the Prime Minister, Mr Lazar, and reviewed a guard of honour of Hungarian troops. There were no speeches at the airport, but in a brief chat to journalists she was asked whether it was an interesting experience to be reviewing Warsaw Pact troops. She said it was indeed, but she added that she hoped—as she put it—that we could live together in peace in the future.

Editorial comments: | MT’s flight arrived at 2030. BBC indexes give a slightly fuller account: first visit by a British PM, time right for talks, hopes East-West can live together; next 16 years up to 2000 very important. |
