Editorial comments: 1630-1745. MT visited the Dr French Memorial Home for the elderly. The Finchley Times, 4 February 1982, reports that she sang "Happy Birthday" to 95-year-old Elsie Howard and declared, "It is absolutely wonderful to be here again. I have been here from time to time and I have never seen it looking as beautiful as it is now." The Barnet Press, 5 February 1982, has a further account. MT paid tribute to the dead of both world wars. She had had talks earlier in the day with US Secretary of State Alexander Haig and reflected: "We talked about how to keep the peace which we have had now for a very long period. When I came here and saw that memorial to Dr French’s son, "I go into action tomorrow ,,," it reminded me of everything we now enjoy in this country - we say we are a free country and we are - is because of people like him".
