Remarks returning to No.10 after announcing Argentine surrender

Document type: Speeches, interviews, etc.
Venue: Downing Street
Source: BBC Radio News Report 0700 15 June 1982
Editorial comments: At 2214 MT made her Commons statement announcing the Argentine surrender. ITN broadcast live film of her return to Downing Street as a newsflash at 0003. She was met by a crowd of more than a hundred people singing "Rule Britannia" to whom she spoke after exchanging a few words with reporters. A better tape came to hand after the publication of the CD-ROM; accordingly, this version of the text supersedes that on the CD-ROM. The New York Times report (15 June 1982) has MT saying: "''What matters is that it was everyone together - we all knew what we had to do and we went out there and did it.''

MT:

Just wonderful news, and it's Great Britain. Marvellous forces, every single one of them. [Reporters trying to ask about ceasefire. Barely audible.] It's just been … it's just been everyone together, and that's what matters. We knew what we had to do, we knew what we had to do ...

MALE REPORTER (1):

How do you feel about our boys …

MT:

[Talking over him] … and we went about it …

MALE REPORTER (2):

Do you think the ceasefire will hold, Prime Minister?

MT:

[irritable intake of breath] I believe so, I believe so. There are still one or two things ... Listen to everyone. I must go down and talk to them
