The Daily Telegraph (30 April 1977) reported MT commenting on the collapse of the Liberal vote at Ashfield: "The traditional Liberal voters have shown they want nothing to so with the pact. It may cause the Liberal MPs to wonder if they have done the right thing". Handed a wooden door number ("No.10") she said: "I will look after it until I can use it - and that won’t be long" (Evening Standard, 29 April 1977). The Evening News, 29 April 1977, adds the comment (on Ashfield): "It is particularly good because we have got the result not by Labour voters staying away, but because they voted for us. We gained a lot of votes from Labour". |
