Early life Photo of Alfred Roberts laying down his robes as Alderman (voted out by Labour)

Document type: Declassified documents
Venue: Grantham Town Hall

Editorial comments: The picture was published in the paper on 23 May 1952 when Alderman Roberts was voted off the council by the new Labour majority. The event caused great distress to the Roberts family. Alderman Roberts declared, emotionally, as he removed the robe: "No medals, no honours, but an inward sense of satisfaction". The photographer was Peter Dean; he recalls that the picture was blurred because flash photography was not allowed in the council chamber.
